Mnay of us are puzzled my Steve Jobs claim that there are no third party applications or ways to get apps developed and that it was done to protect the Cingular Network. What I think he meant to say but was not prepared to confirm is this..

Apple INC is becoming a JavaMe licensee to provide JavaME for the iPhone platform. Remember folks JavaME MIDP 2.0 provides that applications should be certified to get on a Carriers Application deck and certainly Cingular does follow this guide. See this for a slight confirmation.
