I’ve been out of academia for a few years now, but lately I’ve been watching a lot of random Coursera courses. One meta-thing that’s become apparent is that presentation technology has moved forward since I stopped teaching. So far I haven’t been able to figure out exactly how these courses are put together, and Coursera seems surprisingly tight-lipped about exactly what they’re doing. In particular there are three parts:

1. What presentation software and hardware are the instructors using? Most seem to be using something like Powerpoint or Keynote; but many of them, especially in the sciences, are drawing on the screen as they speak. How are they doing that? Are they using a Wacom graphics tablet, an iPad, or something else? And what software are they using to do this? (It’s possible there’s more than one answer here.)

2. The lectures seem to be recorded in real time. What screen recording software are they using for this? (Again, different instructors may well be using different software.)

3. Some of the lectures mix video of the lecture with the Powerpoint slides. What’s the editing software used to do this?

Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?
