This seems like a dumb question but I really can't figure it out. Where do you look to find the domain name of a computer?

I tried using IP address and workgroup instead but they didn't work.

at the linux command prompt

To find the hostname

$hostname

To find the domain name

$domainname


check

/etc/hosts

follow the link:
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/hostname.1.html

for example:

xyz@ucc.ie

domain name is : ucc.ie
