operations on GIFS and JPEGS in JAVA

hello,
i have problem like this: i'd like to open, save gifs and jpegs in java and carry out some operations on them: like join two pictures together (let's say they are of width*height size each and the result would be of size (2*width)*height. i'd also like to know how to save a jpeg file but using different compression quality.
