Initialization of VM error

When in DOS I recieve the message -
ERROR OCCURRED DURING INITIALIZATION OF VM
JAVA/LANG/NOCLASSDEFFOUNDERROR:JAVA/LANG/OBJECT

What does this mean and what can I do to fix this
error?
