Security problem

I have actually done a Vigenere cryptography program using JAVA(KAWA program). However, I had to improve it to make it more secure. Is there any other higher level cryptography program I can do?? Also, I have to use the program on a website(example, like those where u have to log on with the username and password). However, I am unsure on how to link it with the submit button. Am I supposed to write the program in applet or an application?? If possible, I can send the sample program of it. Please help
