I think you are from a pascal or c background coming to Java programming :-) I think if you want to implements a file like that better go for a RANDOM ACCESS FOR FILES in my opinion.

If you think usage of RANDOM ACCESS FOR FILES is not usefull then if you could describe in more detail your requirement might be able to help....
