SimpleDateFormat

I have tried using SimpleDateFormat class to validate the date and also to check the format. But it does not validate certain invalid dates like 02/29/1997, format MM/dd/yyyy. It also gives an error for certain valid dates like 02/29/2000. What could be the problem?
