> the dot (.) means "local directory"
> double dot (..) means "parent directory"

> the same u get when u type [cd .] in command prompt. so when u type [cd ..] it means go up one directory from the current one.

The dot (and dot-dot) comes in handy when you want to use packages from a relative location, but don't necessarily want them to always be "visible."
