Simple How To Java Instructions

> I'm taking a Java course. I am trying to do my homework assignment. I had a Java 1.1 certification study guide that came with a Java book. I installed the JDK 1.1.3 because when I tried to download the Platform 2, it was too large for my computer to download. The installation seemed to be successful, but my question is, HOW DO I ACCESS JAVA NOW? I typed a program in the PFE 32 editor. How do I put it together with the JDK 1.1.3 that I installed to compile it and try to run it? Seems like an easy thing for you experienced programs but for the smaller computer brains starting out, it's difficult. If there is someone who can assist me, I would appreciate it.
