Maybe you could position the JEditorPane (with invisible border) in a JPanel to get the effect of a margin?

There is likely a better way than this; probably you need to spend some quality time between the sheets of a thick Swing book...

JDK 1.3 has great package(s) javax.swing.text (within this you have packages for RTF and HTML documents) for building commercial standard editors. You might want to look at messages posted under "" in this form.
