I also have the error message that pops up on my computer stating: Could not find main class. Program will exit. [OK]. The error message has the title bar "Java Virtual Machine Launcher." Though I have yet to remove the problem, I think I have found some vital information that will help everyone affected.

To sum up what I have read so far, Microsoft and Sun had a legal dispute and Sun won. Thus Microsoft has to remove all Microsoft Java scripting from its software by 2007. The rest I will let you read for yourself at this page:

http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/faq.asp

With further documentation at this location:

http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/java/default.asp

I hope this helps.

Okay, someone actually found this at Java's website:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/wjview.xml

SOLUTION

If this error occurs during startup, it is mostly likely caused by a spyware or adware program which is missing, corrupt, or partially deleted.

Remove Spyware/Adware

Using your favorite search engine, search for "spyware removal utility" as your search phrase. This search will help you locate many free spyware removal utilities.

Note: The Spyware Removal Utility can help you get rid of this error message partially. Any new spyware can get itself downloaded to your system later. To get rid of this problem completely, try the second option given below.

Remove WJView entries from Startup

Wjview lets you view Windows based Java applications. You might receive an error message if Wjview attempts to start an application on your system that no longer exists.

You may need to modify the system configuration settings to completely get rid of the error. To do so, follow these steps:
Click Start > Run.
The Run dialog box appears.
Type msconfig.exe.
Click OK.
The System Configuration Utility dialog box appears.
Select the Startup tab.
Deselect the WJView.exe and/or javaw.exe check boxes that are associated with this problem.
Click OK.
You will be prompted to restart the computer. Restart the system to apply changes.

Note: msconfig.exe utility is not available with Windows 2000.

I also have an old problem, similar to yours, but not quite.
Every time I try to run a .jar file on my PC, I get this error massage: "Failed to load Main-Class manifest attribute from ... .jar". This happens to all .jar files. I am using WinXP SP2 MC Edition and JAVA 1.4.2.04 or 1.5.0.02 version.
Can anybody help me?

I had to reinstall azureus and I was getting this error message also.I finally figured out why.Running my spyware program didnt help,so I opened the main folder that azureus was installed too and I realized I had dragged the azureus exe file to the desktop rather than creating a shortcut to it there.I put the exe back in the main azureus folder clicked it and everything worked fine.I created a shortcut to it on the desktop and said duh.I hope this helps someone

In the mean time I have solved my problem. I was trying to run .jar files (midlets) on a PC using JAVA VM. Anyway, the thing is that when running such files, you need "JAVA 2 Platform Micro Edition Wireless Toolkit" (actual version is 2.3 Beta Release); you can find this on Sun's site (http://java.sun.com/products/sjwtoolkit/download-2_3.html). If anybody is interested...
All the best

I'm having the same problem with the Java Virtual Machine error message. Well I took your advice and downloaded Ad-Aware. It didn't seem to find any spy-ware only one result appeared, TopMoxie. Could this be causeing the error message. I'd appreciate the help because this message is driving me BATTY...

Thanks

Check hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run in your registry and also hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run.
lso check your autostart.

This problem has nothing to do with Java.
