In the UK only salesmen and foreigners talk about vacuum cleaners. The locals call them hoovers (regardless of brand).

In Korea only old people use vacuum cleaners.

"American Capitalism"
The basics of capitalism; people who produce decide where their money or goods go.
The basics of socialism; the government(aristocracy) decides where the money or goods go.

As Alan Greenspan commented when testifying before Congress about the financial system collapse (I'm paraphrasing): I'm a life long believer in free markets but what I'm only now learning is the extent to which people will allow their own self-interest get in the way of the good of their companies.

"As Alan Greenspan commented..."
Yes, and I agree.
And I can even add one better.
Pure Capitalism and pure Socialism are both equally evil.

But the basic problem - What is the best mechanism to use to decide who keeps , and who takes.

Wow, you get 8min out of yours? I think I get half that.

My wife pushes me into buying these stupid pretty things.

And I think Bruce is wrong about them lasting forever, unless that has changed.

I'm glad I like my job...but I think we should love people, and that would help folks with jobs they thought they hated enjoy them again.

Sometimes bad work environments consist of a few people who love their job so much that they care nothing for others around them, including their own families.

And the mathematician/philosopher in me wants to generalize further: all "-ism"'s will have unacceptable side effects.

I have no good answer, and I suspect nobody does, but my intuition says that a combination of mechanisms is necessary: sort of a hybrid approach (like what Scala is to programming paradigms ;-)

This is such an interesting topic I wish there was a chat room-like facility for discussing it.

I misspoke. I should have said "has a comparative advantage only" rather than "only good".

And Happy Christmas (or Hannukkah) to all.
