Sounds familiar - though our base had been PowerBuilder. The 500d project is running since 2003...

I did two other "rewrites", one was very successful as we didn't look at the original code (what was need from the old system had been "tested in") - by this we had a fresh start and didn't try to make things "better". We just got it working.

The other rewrite was stopped as the estimates for the technical spec superceeded the implementation effort of the original system...

The art of rewriting is to balance throwing enough legacy stuff away and preserving the experience that went into the old system.
