Using both Pow and Apache on OSX Lion
I have written previously about using Pow for Ruby/Rails development. Pow is great if you are purely developing in Ruby, however I’ve recently found myself needing to edit a WordPress site. Pow intercepts requests to port 80 by default meaning that no requests can make it through to the default Apache installation on OSX. I’ve [...]

Gone Static
For assorted reasons I decide to dump Mephisto and just do the blog as static pages generated with Webby. There’s really no reason to be running a Rails app for this; it’s bloatware for the task. I’ve saved the earlier posts using the old URL format, but for simplicity gone with a different URL format for new posts.

Data Migrations for NoSQL with Curator
This post is cross-posted at Data Migrations for NoSQL with Curator. The NoSQL movement has brought us a wave of new data stores beyond the traditional relational databases. These data stores come with their own tradeoffs, but they provide some incredible benefits. At Braintree, we are moving in the direction of using Riak as our [...]

Sencha Touch 2 GA Released!
The last few months have flown by faster than almost any before them. The first Sencha Touch 2 release went out in October as a Developer Preview, coinciding with SenchaCon 2011, sparking a huge wave of interest from all over the HTML5 community. Today marks the GA release of Sencha Touch 2.0.0, and we couldn’t be happier with how far...

A Great Cast of Characters
Building a great team is a daunting task that is always on my mind. I'm always looking for ways to improve my current team, and to expand it in ways that will challenge each member. Many sleepless nights have been spent on figuring out how to build a team that is constantly improving. The easiest way to get a team that wants to grow is to have...

When to Break Apart your Application
At speakerconf Aruba 2012, Stefan Tilkov presented on the topic of building Systems. One aspect of his presentation that really struck a chord with me was around the competing desires while designing and delivering an application. This blog entry is about summarizing that aspect and what I took away from it.** Stefan noted that early in an...

github.com/drbrain/hoe-travis docs.seattlerb.org/hoe-travis hoe-travis is a Hoe plugin that allows your gem to gain maximum benefit from travis-ci.org. Rails View Annotator
A Sea of Views Ruby on Rails projects tend to generate a large number of view files. In a recent, fairly-young project I found we had nearly 300 different files under app/views. On an older project we had over 1,400. These files are often intertwined, sometimes in non-obvious ways. When it comes time to make a [...]

Aligning Business & Programmer Goals
A theme emerged, last week at speakerconf, around the idea that programmers and businesses still don't seem to be on the same page. I'm not sure if it came up even earlier, but for me it began after I gave a presentation on Lessons Learned Adopting Clojure. The talk is similar to Lessons Learned while Introducing a New Programming Language, but...

Deploying a Nesta CMS Blog with Pygments Syntax Highlighting to Heroku
Blogging and/or setting up a simple site should be a simple proposition. There are a lot of great frameworks out there that handle the software portion of running such a site. However, you don’t just want a stock setup. You have to take into account proper asset caching for performance, slick syntax highlighting, an aesthetically pleasing...

Site Relaunch
I’m currently in the middle of putting a fresh coat of paint on RyanDaigle.com, the previous home of the What’s new in Edge Rails series. All old links to http://ryandaigle.com/articles will be redirected to an archived version of the site at http://archives.ryandaigle.com. I doubt all links will make the change, but I’ve...

Untangle Domain and Persistence Logic with Curator
This post is cross-posted at http://www.braintreepayments.com/devblog/untangle-domain-and-persistence-lo gic-with-curator. The problem Ruby on Rails is a great web framework, and we use it extensively at Braintree to build web apps. One criticism of Rails, however, is that it encourages tight coupling of domain and persistence layers. The...
