2008 roundup - Recession kicking in?
As my thumbs are twiddling waiting to see if projects start coming in next year, I thought I'd do a roundup of this years projects (open and closed). I was pondering if everyone else was seeing the effects of the recession, so I'd be interested to hear if you've also seen work slacking off. Let's hope next year we see some more life from the...

Me griping about PHP :) (closures this time)
Yeah, that’s about all this post will be. I read an article from IBM developerworks on the upcoming 5.3 features, and something got my dander up: closures. I first got acquainted with closures in Groovy last year, and love them. They make sense. The syntax is pretty easy, and feels natural in the [...]

New community site for Javascript developers and user groups
Testing out the demand for a community site focusing on Javascript developers. When I was investigating the Javascript Magazine idea (still in the works - got some great contributors potentially lined up!) I realized that Javascript is everywhere, yet nowhere. There are few, if any, Javascript user groups or similar resources out there. [...]

PHP Support in NetBeans 6.5
Long dismissed as a “toy Java IDE”, NetBeans—Sun’s open source Integrated Development Evironment (IDE)—has really grown up in recent years. No longer is it just for Java, either: for web developers, NetBeans 6.5 now supports Ruby and PHP out of the box. Surprisingly, that support is so good that it now compares favourably to more [...]

Are traditional object models enough? Can we evolve usefulness in OO models?
Just a quick thought here after looking at someone’s code I just stumbled on. This person had a “isReadOnly()” method inside of a generic “set” method which would allow them to determine if a property should be allowed to be modified or not. It got me to thinking again how the traditional notion of...

Tag from Groovysoup
One of the fun things about having a blog is getting tagged to write stuff that you have absolutely no desire to write. But, it’s a good exercise and reintroduces me to my blog, and some of you might find the following things about me interesting. Thanks Dave Here we go: 1. [...]

Javascript Magazine - gauging interest
I’m in the planning stages of a Javascript magazine, similar to the GroovyMag publication I’ve already got out.  Before jumping in too deep, I’m looking to gauge interest in the idea.  Are you interested in a monthly Javascript magazine?  If so, click the link above and sign up.  Or, just leave a comment below.  :) [...]

The Framework as Franchise
My PHP Advent article is up; therein I try to describe the parallels between public frameworks and business franchises. However, the PHP Advent site doesn’t support comments; if you would like to comment, please do so on this blog post instead. Thanks!

Age of software industry
Talking with my friend Shawn Hartsock the other day, and we got to talking about the state of software, and some of the history of software development.  He’s a big nerd on this subject, and considers ‘computing’ to go back hundreds (or thousands!) of years.  Yes, one can make that argument, but I when I [...]

Git Book is Finshed!
It's been kind of quiet around here. It's not that I haven't had much to say, it's that I haven't had the time to say it! For those of you who follow my various microblogs probably even noticed a dip in updates over the last few weeks. Every last ounce of energy has been put into the final push for the book and I had to cut back on the...

Write a blog post: Check
So this is the second day in a row that I've explicitly taken 10 minutes to write out a to do list for the day. 10 minutes is the max. If I make it that long and am still writing things out, tough. On today's list was write a blog post which was positioned after responding to a bunch of emails. Responded to those messages, now time for the blog...

What did you do today?
Either I'm making up for time I spent slacking, or I just took 4 years off of my life today. Today I managed to: Have my git book from Pragmatic Bookshelf announced: Pragmatic Version Control Using Git - It'll be on a shelf near you this fall and in PDF form before then. I filed my taxes (not completely today - I'd already done then, just...
