SugarCRM wants you, Mr. DBA Man
If you eat and breathe INNER JOINs and sub-selects, think that UNIONs shouldn't be busted, and like to shard databases on the weekend for fun followed by late nights of drinking, SugarCRM's got a place for you. Ok, so we're not looking for all of that. The drinking part is optional. ;-) Seriously, we're looking for a top notch MySQL DBA to add...

Cranky Ol' PHP'er Syndrome (COPS) Defined
Cranky Ol' PHP'er Syndrome (COPS) DefinedTime for a little humor. :-) I thought I was the only one, but apparently there are more like me. As its not just me, I'm defining a new disease that is rare, but does effect some PHP programmers. Cranky Ol' PHP'er Syndrome, or COPS. Symptoms include consistently throwing out all but fringe tools when...

Alternative PHP Cache
APC is a free opcode and memory cache designed as an optimizing framework for creating robust and responsive Web applications written in PHP. It remains a PECL extension thus not bundled with PHP, so you will have to download and install it separately.

ASUS My Cinema U3100 Mini DMB-TH - Partly working
These are my notes/ comments on getting it to work (partly), check the blog again every month or so to see if I ever get the thing working fully.. After leaving the Digital TV sticks lying around for a few months, I finally got back to looking at the issues with drivers. ASUS have been absolutely useless, and have ceased responding to all...

CodeIgniter
A MVC Web application framework unlike some of the others you may have run across. It has a small footprint, it's fast, and it doesn't get in your way. Only use the parts you need and discard the rest. If Rasmus endorses this one then I'm all ears.

How to Expose PHP's Private Parts
I’ve been tinkering with dumping PHP objects, and have found myself constantly running into a brick wall. The output from print_r and friends is fine in some contexts, but for larger structures, it would be nice to tidy the output up a bit and wrap it in some HTML. However, these functions have a certain [...]

Regular expressions are like broccoli...
This was the analogy I came up with when teaching a PHP class recently. I needed to review the topic of regular expressions, but it’s one that neither I nor the students seemed to have much interest in. The examples that I had were adequate, but explaining the examples was still unnatural. The students didn’t [...]

Patterns of Intellectual Bullies
This post is in response to http://terrychay.com/blog/article/challenges-and-choices.shtml, specifically this part: When people put “design patterns” on their resume, I like to ask them a particular question — especially when their background is J2EE or they say they know design patterns. The question I like to ask is define...

Speaking At php|works In Atlanta
Next week, I’ll be speaking at php|works and PyWorks in Atlanta on Representational State Transfer (REST). My talk is in the general track this time, so it’s good for both the PHP and Python audiences who will be attending the conference. PHP Debugging in Ubuntu using Xdebug and Vim
I'm a big fan of using Ubuntu as a desktop environment, and for local development as well. In this article Liam walks even a beginner through the steps to set-up a complete LAMP stack, and then installing Xdebug and configuring Vim with the DBGp plugin.
