Disappointed with PHP namespace seperator decision
Haven’t blogged on PHP in awhile, so here goes… It seems the PHP team has decided on using \ as the namespace separator. I’m still flummoxed as to why :: or ::: wasn’t chosen. So now we’ll have things like my\package\name but will we be able to use dynamic namespaces? Like my\package\$name ? I just have a strange...

Escape from Namespaces
I admit that I am an unproductive whiner on this issue. I don’t care if namespaces go in or not; at this point, I’d almost rather they not. But some of my feelings as expressed on IM this morning: 09:13:08 pmjones: yay\for\new\namespace\separator 09:13:12 pmjones: hmmmm 09:13:19 nate: oh geez 09:13:27 nate: I can't [...]

... But Some Suck Less Than Others
(N.b.: This is a post I’ve had in the queue for several months now, and while I still don’t feel like it’s “finished”, it’s time to just publish the thing and be done with it.) Laura Thomson says that all frameworks suck — and she’s right! But maybe not for the reasons you think. Before we [...]

The Heart Of The Warrior - Pt. 1
Some people are able to care very little about their work. I am not one of these people. Sometimes, it’s to my own detriment. I just left a meeting where my passion for our team and our project allowed me to make a wrong call. I was wrong. Dead wrong. My heart was in the right [...]

PHP Temporary Streams
It's been a while since David Sklar called out to let a thousand string concatenations bloom. That discussion produced some entertaining suggestions for putting strings together such as using preg_replace and calling out to MySQL with SELECT CONCAT. Here's an approach that uses filesystem functions. When combined ...

Distributing resources with Horde_Support_ConsistentHash
If you need to distribute resources across multiple servers, consistent hashing is an essential technique. Horde now provides an implementation that allows for different node weights, hashing of any kind of object as a node, and tuning the number of point

Balance
How do I find it? How open or closed should I be? How engaged or withdrawn? How intense or relaxed? I haven’t figured this out yet. The more I strive to do, the less connected I am to some of the most important people in the world to me. And yet, I think about them constantly… I [...]

To Be A Lover
This year has taught me so much about myself. When wake up and I look in the mirror everyday, I say three words to remind myself of who I am: Lover, Warrior, Champion. Lately, I’ve been thinking about the Lover part. It’s so hard to Love, but it’s rewards are endless. Love doesn’t require time to build, [...]

JSON based calendar provider for thunderbird and lightning
For this weeks hack, I've been looking at Lightning, the calendaring extension to thunderbird. What brought this on was we where discussing a bug tracker for the Anti-spam / Mail management software, and none of the software that i've seen for this either is elegantly written, easy to set up or simple to use. To me the 'ideal' way to handle...
