I've shot a fair number of photos over the summer and now that I'm using iPhoto as a catalog, I've noticed that it has started to slow down a little, mainly on startup. Digging through the help I found that you can organise your photos by "film roll", which is just a grouping of all photos that were imported at the same time. By displaying these film rolls (View -> Film Rolls), you can expand or collapse each roll in your entire collection, making your photo library much quicker to navigate.
