I am trying to remember the summer of 2001...Istanbul hosted the World
Offshore Championship that year. It was amazing to watch these 4000 bhp
beasts going in circles over the Bosphorus, one of my favorite places on
Earth.
I grabbed several rolls of Velvia, my beloved Nikon F5 and a tripod and quickly headed to the waterfront. That day I was determined to experiment with panning. The results were not great, but I would not call them bad either, especially for a first try.
I managed to shoot seven rolls of Fuji Velvia in 2 hours. I started
experimenting with shutter speeds ranging from 1/250 to 4 seconds.
Though the camera was mounted on a tripod, it wasn't long before I
discover the difficulty of this technique. First, there is the problem
of aligning the horizon. Second, following a fast object moving on a
straight path is not easy; even with a fast auto-focus. And last,
setting the exposure was a real challenge - the background was always
changing.
Anyway, here are couple of examples from that day. I'll post more once I manage to scan the slides.
