I recently used an old gift card I forgot I had to guy a collection of four Martin Scorsese films. The collection included Raging Bull, Boxcar Bertha, New York, New York, and The Last Waltz. Here's my short review of each.
Raging Bull - You may be surprised to know that I had never seen this film before, though I had heard it was pretty good. Verdict: A damn fine film.
Quick aside - Jake LaMotta's wife Vikki posed for Playboy at age 51 (but looked no older than about 40, and was still stunning). I wonder if that's the age record.
Boxcar Bertha - I had never even heard of this film before. Features a very young (and naked) Barbara Hershey and David Carradine (also naked). Verdict: Not bad/Better than expected.
Quick aside - Originally this was just supposed to be yet another Roger Corman summer sexploitation film, but Martin Scorsese got ahold of it and turned it into a decent movie. I thought the ending was brilliant.
New York, New York - I never saw this film either, and barely remembered that it had ever been made. Verdict: Generally awful movie with a plodding storyline, and characters that are either loathsome (DeNiro) or annoying (Minelli). I can see why the movie tanked.
Quick aside - I thought the movie was based on the Sinatra song. It turns out that it was originally written for and sung by Liza Minelli. Sinatra covered it shortly afterward, changing it slightly (and had much more success with it).
The Last Waltz - This is a concert film showing the final performance of The Band interspersed with some interviews of the band members. Verdict: Can't really be rated as a movie. It's good music, and you get to see a lot of the great musicians show up and play a song or two.
