I recently purchased and played the computer game Sins of a Solar Empire.
Verdict: Meh. It's certainly not as rich or immersive as Galactic Civilizations II, but it's better if you want more combat and less, uh, thinking. Also, it can be played multi-player. Not that I can see myself playing it multi-player, since it's going to take a few hours unless you play very small maps.
Actually, it reminds me of a chopped down version of Imperium Galactica. Which, by the way, was an underappreciated game.
Maybe I should just join Eve Online and forget ever having a semblance of a life.
