If I had to choose one thing to include in every undergraduate software program, something that would have a positive impact on the quality of developers coming out of these institutions, something that wouldn't cost much to implement, it would be this: Use coding standards, from day one. The grads I see coming my way have no idea how the real software world works. I think we need to start ingraining good practices as soon as we can. Coding standards are such a small thing, that has such a great impact when it comes to teams of developers. You just can't everyone doing their own thing. If you're looking for an example, just check out the one on Juval Lowy's site: www.IDesign.net although there are many others. Just pick one, and stick with it. One other small/not-so-small thing: get the students to use source control. Same reasons as above. Please drop a comment if you have any more easy to implement industry-proven practices that you think would help turn up a notch the quality of grads. If anything, it'll improve their chances for getting a job....
