Let me start off by saying I think credit card companies in general suck.  You could go to a loan shark for the same interest rates that most of them are now charging (I recently had a credit card bump my interest rate to 30%...needless to say that account got closed).

About a year ago I got a SEARS credit card for some small purchases.  Every month, I kept noticing $30-$40 in charges, even though I wasn't using it.  I called SEARS and found out that they had some type of life insurance coverage, and some “maintenance” fees.  I asked them to remove the charges and any insurance.  Next month...charges were still there.  This went on for several months.

Finally, I decided to close the credit card.  I called, and they confirmed that they'd closed it.  A month later, a statement came with the same damn charges.

I called again - they assured me it would be closed this time.  Guess what...yep - next month the same freakin' charges.

I finally sent a certified letter asking them to close the credit card.

Guess what I found in my mail this week?  A statement.  With the same damn charges.

Needless to say, they're being kind enough to not only keep adding the charges every month, but also charge me an ungodly interest rate.  Ironically, the monthly payment that is due is less than the charges that they add every month - which means if you didn't pay attention, you'd get further in debt each month.

Save yourself the trouble.  If you can't get rid of credit cards completely, then at least stay away from SEARS.  3 months later I'm still just trying to close the stupid account.

A year ago in April, I made the mistake of opening a SEARS charge card when I purchased my Kenmore Washing Machine. At the time, I was promised 12 mos. no payment-no interest terms on this account. I was very careful not to let the time expire and several days before it became due, I went into my local Sears store and paid the bill IN FULL. However, in the interim, I moved into a new home and needed a new dryer and stove, so in October I purchased those items on the same 12 mos. no payment--no interest plan. In the hub-bub of moving, I neglected to open my next statements from Sears (thinking I had until October before I owed them any more money). BUT, I have recently received a statement from SEARS saying that my account was seriously past due and charging me several $35.00 late fees. What they had done was take a portion of the payment for the washing machine which I made in April and applied it to either the stove or the dryer, leaving a balance on the account which I knew I had PAID IN FULL. They are now charging me over 28 percent interest in addition to the late charges because I was unaware of what they had done. NOW, IF I HAD NOT PURCHASED THE TWO APPLIANCES IN OCTOBER, THEY WOULD HAVE HAD TO APPLY THE ENTIRE AMOUNT TO THE WASH MACHINE PURCHASE WHEN I PAID IT IN APRIL. BUT BECAUSE I HAD A BALANCE (WHICH WAS ALSO PROMISED AT 12 MOS. NO PAYMENTS-NO INTEREST) THEY APPLIED IT TO THOSE PURCHASES. IS THAT NOT BAIT-AND-SWITCH? ACTUALLY, THEY ARE DISCOURAGING CUSTOMERS FROM MAKING ADDITIONAL PURCHASES BY THESE TACTICS. I VOW AND DECLARE THAT EVEN THOUGH I AM VERY FOND OF KENMORE PRODUCTS WHICH I FIND RELIABLE, I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM SEARS AGAIN.
