Ari Bixhorn gave a great overview of Indigo at the MVP Summit today. The session was very short (only 30 minutes), so not everything was covered, but here are my notes:

Indigo is a response to customer requests for:

• Security
• Interoperability
• Service Oriented Architecture
• And the question "What API should I use?"

Indigo offers 3 value propositions:

• Productivity
  • Unification of the existing technologies (remoting, enterprise services, ASMX, etc.)
  • Attributes and configuration - although all NEW work is configuration-based, don't want to have to recompile code for minor config changes
  • Visual Studio 2005 - the target audience for Indigo, "Whidbey developers"
• Interoperability
  • WS-* Architecture
  • Investment protection - backwards compatible
• Service-Oriented Development
  • Evolutionary, not revolutionary
  • Four tenets article by Don Box

So, what's new in Indigo lately?

• Beta 1 RC is available - "It's a feature complete version for Beta 1" - if you don't think that's funny, what's wrong with you??
• Peer channel - the peer channel is a mesh of nodes, the mesh rearchitects itself based on the addition/removal of nodes, and after a peer connects to the mesh, the mesh removes itself from activity and the peer connects directly with other peers
• Indigo User Group Tour - coming soon!
• Beta 1 for Indigo (the real Beta 1, not the RC of Beta 1) is coming in "Summer, 2005"
• Indigo will be deployed into production at the same time as Longhorn, although it will be available on Longhorn, Windows Server 2003, and Windows XP (the last 2 as an additional download)
