I can remember the old days when I was young and thought that a committee like the W3C is good and is actually everything needed to fulfill the vision of SOAP, WSDL and Web services.
Well, I was young ... some months later I was very excited to hear and read about the SOAPBuilders Interop Lab. A lot of famous companies - and essentiall everybody who was building a SOAP stack - participated in this Interop Lab to make sure that the SOAP implementations did work together in production. It is exactly this 'small piece' that a lot of people in the W3C and similar organizations do not realize: practice and feedback - trial and error.
Now we go for the next stage: Web Services Protocol Workshops. That is great and it is the only way that the sheer number of WS-* have a slight chance to work together - whether from IBM and MS, or BEA, or .... you name it. Take a look at MSDN Web services Developer Center's page where the recent and upcoming workshops sre listed. Very informative and invaluable (OK, Don: 'Only if you are a plumber' :-)).
