Microsoft have turned the Redmond campus into a single wireless hot spot using a technology called White-Fi. The radio waves travel in gaps between television channels known as white spaces, and like TV signals they carry long distances and through building walls.

Thousands of routers for the established Wi-Fi technoogy are needed to equal the coverage provided by the white-space system.
