My stage one pick of players
go-getters: Ballack (Ger), Schweinsteiger (Ger), Lampard (Eng), Rooney (Eng), Trezeguet (Fra), Pires (Fra), Zidane (Fra), Overmars (Hol), Larsson (Swe), Maniche (Por), Deco (Por), Morientes (Spa), Prso (Cro), Nedved (Cze),
no-goes: Owen (needs to stop resting on his prior reputation), Heskey (needs confidence), Zendan has failed to deliver in his first game,
Kuranyi dissapointed me with his unfair play. Actually that's not quite fair; Many players took advantage of the stricter referees, a decision made by Uefa to tighten up. I think that decision has blown up in their faces, as it has just made the players dive more, foul more and expect more. Unfortunately, to the non football fan, glimpsing the games, it would only reinforce their views.
Overall most teams lived up to a good game, but with Holland once again failing to deliver proper football, one wonders when a complete reshuffle is needed.
I think the teams with the strongest shout this year include, Germany, Sweden, France, Spain and of course I would not be a supporter if I did not include England.
After Stage 1, the table reads as follows:
