Patrick Logan quotes Michael Nygard on the recent S3 outage:

Second, the back of my envelope still shows S3 at 99.94% availability for the year. That's better than most data center providers. It's certainly better than most corporate IT departments do

I think that puts the outage in context nicely. We hear about S3 because it's used so widely now. When some IT department goes offline for a few hours, and it affects one website, we don't hear much (if anything) about it. Useful to keep in mind.
