Mark Pilgrim has a post on things an aggregator should support. BottomFeeder does everything on the list except digest authentication (which is what? I have no idea). I do vary on two error conditions:
- 500 (server error) - I ignore this and treat it as a no updates available situation
- 404 - I treat that the same way. If I get 'enough' of these with no updates, I mark the feed black in the UI as a hint to the user, leaving it up to them.
Why not unsubscribe immediately? Because - in my experience - both errors are transient far more often than they are permanent
