I have always been a bit amazed (and occasionally amused) at Python newbies who try to do a simple thing, then complain that the language is s-l-o-w. Upon looking at the code, it then turns out that they've translated an idiom from a language they are familiar with, and that usually doesn't work so well in Python. ... [764 words]
