The new JavaRanch Radio over at JavaRanch is now up and running! If you've not seen JavaRanch before, it's one of the largest independent Java sites on the Internet and differs from many other sites because it really does aim to help the community. Trying to pass a certification? Stop by and check out our certification...

The London Java Meetup Christmas Party was a good night, although I did feel slightly rough the morning after because of the Red Stripe. It was great to see so many people turn up and I think I managed to chat to pretty much everybody for a change. It was also good to meet Sam Newman, Simon Brunning, Stephan Tual and James Strachan for the...

We're going festive at this month's London Java Meetup with our Christmas party on Monday, 15th of December. The full details are available here, but essentially it's a change of venue and there may even be some cross-technology fertilisation as we mingle with some of the London Perl Mongers. This event is open to anybody and if you're...

FileNameMap from the java.net package is a simple interface which provides a mechanism to map between a file name and a MIME type string. It's not actually something that I've come across before, even though it's existed since version 1.1 of the JDK. However, with code like the following, you can get the MIME type using the default JDK...

Regular readers will know that I like IntelliJ and it's the tool that I use whenever possible at work and for my open source development. As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, my current project is making heavy use of the IBM toolset. You name it, we're using it - WebSphere MQ, MQ Integrator, DB2, WebSphere 5.0 and WebSphere Studio...

I've been adding some final little features to Pebble 1.4 and if you've wondered how to get an RSS feed for a single category, here's the answer.

I've not done much work with IBM software but my current project is using it in a big way and the system is heavily message-based. Over the past week I've been installing and getting up to speed with WebSphere 5.0 and WebSphere Studio Application Developer. With a development environment up and running, the first thing I wanted to do was...

Ive been doing some playing around with the various implementations of the security features in Servlet 2.3 compatible web containers. If youve ever built secure web applications, youll know that there are a handful of fairly useful methods on the HttpServletRequest interface. For example, the getUserPrincipal() method allows you to get...
