This is some most excellent stuff: Brad Neuberg: Offline Access and Permanent, Client-Side Storage, Thanks to Dojo.Storage. Here’s a packaged up way to store megabytes (if you need to) permanently on the user’s computer, as long as they’re using one of the browsers used by 95%+ of the population. This is not the kind of [...]

There are some software version numbering conventions that people rely on a little bit. 1.1 is newer than 1.0. alpha is less solid than beta. The exact definitions of a move to 1.1 or from alpha to beta are variable from project to project. People do whatever works for their project, and that’s cool. As [...]

Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier-Hansson spoke out against “traditional” publishers in Shaking up tech publishing. The comments were at least as interesting as the main course. Check out Tim O’Reilly’s comment as a response from an established publisher. Tim puts the whole thing into perspective and makes a good...

Simon Belak on the TurboGears list points to The adventures of scaling, Stage 1, an article about scaling a database-intensive reasonably high traffic (~1M page views a day) site based on Ruby on Rails. The author hits upon many of the common topics in scaling LAMP architecture sites. One thing I didn’t see mentioned, probably [...]

Mark Ramm writes about the approach we’re taking to our TurboGears book in “Lean” Book Publication. Mark set up all of the tools and classes, so he deserves all the credit here. It’s a good setup that I think will ultimately result in a stronger book.

Yesterday, I had an excellent time meeting with folks at TechSmith. You may remember that a few weeks ago, I urged people to pester TechSmith about a Mac version of their wonderful Camtasia product. A few emails with Troy Stein, the Camtasia product manager, later and I was off to meet with them to discuss [...]

cmd.exe on Windows sucks. Cygwin and MinGW aren’t really Windows (though they are certainly better and cygwin is what I use). So, I ask the lazyweb: is there a better command line for Windows? It looks like the company that made 4DOS (JPSoft) is still around and makes better command lines. They’re not entirely cheap [...]
