On more than one occasion in the last 9 months, I've thought about a piece of advice in my head that I wanted to write down, but didn't think was important enough to write an article about. One of those pieces of advice made it to my blog (my post on re-throwing exceptions). I've decided to add an Advice section to DotNetDevs to collect these...

IanG goes to town on latent typing (which he doesn't think I'm talking about), and compares C++ to C# to Python. Obviously, I like the Python example the best, because it is the most power with the least amount of cruft. Ian points out a way to get the type of thing I want using reflection: public static void CallDraw<T>(T something) {...

Apparently, MCE 2005 boxes cannot join domains any more (although, oddly, the option is still given during initial setup). The reasoning is that the extenders don't work on domains. Patching a DLL can get around it, at the cost of extender support, if you need your MCE box on a domain (say, at work, working on MCE-specific software). This...

Charles Cook gets why I'm aggrevated with .NET generics. Using his examples, let's make the leap he didn't show. In C++ you can do this, but in .NET you can't: class TestClass<T> { public void Foo(T t) { t.Bar(); } } This is exactly what I mean about "latent typing". The C++ compiler doesn't care what type T is, as long as you can call...

I read posts like this one detailing the new generics system in .NET and it makes the baby Jesus want to cry. Where is the latent typing that made generic programming so powerful? The monstrosity they've cooked up is basically useful for any type of generic programming where you don't actually USE the thing... meaning, containers. *sigh* I...

I'm very pleased that DotNetDevs has a new article up as of tonight. Steve Johnson, whom I know from the Denver Pragmatic Practitioners group, has written an article about using encryption in .NET, a topic which he spoke on at WinDev this year. The attention to detail on this article far eclipses any other on our site; from first draft to...

An update to this story. Sun was apparently horrified at the lengths to which this lawyer had went, and has made nice with Ted Neward. Whew. :) But, more importantly, is this a fluke? Think back about how many times you see this kind of stuff happening, on a small and large scale, and ask yourself whether there seems to be some sizeable...

Since I'm just a corporate shill for NewsGator now, I'll re-post Greg's message in its entirety. :-D Yep, we're still looking for great Windows and .NET developers.  Turns out it's pretty hard to find folks with the depth of knowledge we're looking for.  Most recently, Gordon has joined us (welcome!), but we still need more help. So I...
