I've been studying recently for the MySQL certification test and have discovered a few tricks along the way. One of my favorites is the combination of using pager and vertical output. To set your pager to use less: mysql> pager less PAGER set to less Now when you perform a select which returns more rows than rows on your screen, the pager will...

Weird thing happened today... I was working in MySQL and accidentally hit Escape followed by the character u and it jumped me to the next word (it really uppercases the word but in my case the word was already uppercased so I didn't notice the effect). So I started playing with other escape sequences to see what they do and here's what I found...

Lately I've been using the 'fm' Python script I found a while ago quite a bit. It can come in really handy when your looking at program names that don't suggest what they do. I recently compiled and installed KDE 3.2 via konstruct. In the package is a directory called 'apps' with various other apps I could compile. A few in there I wasn't sure...

Installed PyBloxsom to replace my Movable Type installation. I like this weblog tool because it's more simple and I can edit posts in Vim. I'm also having fun hacking it -- good for my Python learning.

Latest thought... The goal: To be able to distribute PHP based applications on CD with the ability to access them without a network connection, and without installing Apache (or other) web server. The idea: Take a browser engine (Gecko, KHTML, Trident (IE)) and make a simple browser, but also compile in a PHP engine. When you load a page on your...

I've been slacking on getting out more newbie Python articles but I have a few ideas that I have some code in the works for. The Oregon rain is approaching so I'll likely have more inside time to write some...

Soon after Mozilla Firebird / Phoenix 0.6 was released, I found the Unix build instructions and started building my own Firebird builds with XFT enabled and using the GTK2 UI. The resulting browser is a very nice looking one with...

I used to enjoy cryptograms a lot and wanted to generate some on my own. I originally wrote a script to do this in Perl. While learning Python, I rewrote it and learned a few things about the string library...
