Damn - you apparently can't compile DTrace static providers on Nexenta :( I was hoping that having GNU/Solaris up and running would let me use Wez Furlong's PHP DTrace provider to trace PeopleAggregator PHP code, but it looks like that's not going to happen tonight. Downloading SchilliX now to see if I have better luck there. Comment

This HOWTO for installing MogileFS on Debian Sarge is almost right for Etch as well, but it's a little easier now. You can get all the dependencies like this: apt-get install subversion liblinux-aio-perl libbsd-resource-perl libcompress-zlib-perl libnet-netmask-perl libio-stringy-perl libwww-perl libdanga-socket-perl libdbi-perl Comment

Inspired by the evangelism from Joyent (and more... and here's an interview about zfs, one of the coolest bits), I've been taking a look at OpenSolaris. I've finally found a distribution that's familiar enough to work well for me - Nexenta OS, aka GNU/Solaris. Thanks to Tim Bray for the pointer. (I see he's written more on Nexenta... personally...

After not having much luck the other day with OpenSolaris on Xen, I'm trying another way - the BeleniX Live CD. This is problematic too, though. I downloaded the ISO image, burned it to a CD, and booted it on my Linux box, only to get a bunch of errors about all the autoconfig stuff receiving KILL signals, and a kernel panic and reboot. Trying...

I've been running Xen on Debian etch for a couple of weeks now on all my own Linux boxes and all our new company servers, and it's working great. With xen-tools, I can build a pristine Debian VM with one command. I have a script that'll install all the prerequisites for PeopleAggregator and general VM administration, put my SSH keys in the...

Dave Winer writes today about making spreadsheets able to fetch data via web services calls. Very handy. I'd expect you can probably already do this on Excel using VBA, or on your office suite of choice, but it's a little harder when you don't control the software. A co-worker from Humanware had a lot of great ideas along these lines a couple...
