I'm just now starting to set up my new Debian server over at ServerMatrix. I've been a Redhat guy for many years so I'm a little out my element, but definitely enjoying the power of apt-get. I just updated my distrib in 60 seconds with apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade (Thanks to Matt for the live technical support on #mobitopia)...

It was getting crazy last week. I was getting more and more and more spam. I would go to bed, wake up 8 hours later and have 50+ messages waiting for me. My SpamAssassin was just completely falling down on the job. At first I lowered the hit level, and that didn't seem to help. Then I went throught he .spamassassin/user_prefs and added points...

Okay, so I wrote that long piece from the heart yesterday but of course my feelings about this are not completely in accordance with my wife's and my wife's family and my parents either. Joy. I'm not battling that many fronts, sorry. So despite being completely against it on principle, I've taken down the photos that were...

I'm starting to see over reactions to my last post. Yes, that call this morning jolted me and Ana a bit, but that's where it ends. I'm so *sick* of this culture of fear that we live in here in America. No, in fact, there are *not* a lot of wackos out there. No, in fact, there are *not* stalkers waiting at every corner. No, in fact,...

I'm on hold with the police. Someone called this morning and when Ana answered the phone they asked to talk to Alex, thinking they must be mistaken she asked who was calling and passed the phone to me. The guy asked for Alex again, and I said "Alex?" and he laughed and said "yeah, little Alex" and then hung up. Welcome...

I just got this in my email: NOT FOR USE ON THE SITE Hi - saw your postings on the web... I am a british journalist based in London. do you have any contacts for Batsuna members? Simon Bucks Managing Editor, Sky News 07957 434034 020 7705 3299 First of all, I decide what gets published on this site, thanks. If you want something offline, then you...

Last night around midnight, I was online on #mobitopia and someone said that another bomb went off in Madrid. That turned out to be an understatement as it turned out that ETA set off three bombs in light-rail trains in the south section of the city, killing over 180 people and injuring over a thousand others. Wow. Around 3 a.m. we called and my...

I've been debating this for a few weeks now, but I think I'm about to change my main domain to www.beattie.info and move my weblog to russ.beattie.info. What do you think? Please consider this post a "confirmation" post. The benefits of moving to the russ.beattie.info url first is that it's a quite bit shorter than my...

I just stopped over at JohnKerry.com and coughed up some cash ($100) for the campaign. I think it's very important for Democrats to show their financial support for the candidate in order to counter-act the support of the wealthy and connected for the other ticket. It's just as quick and easy as any online store. In fact, I wish Amazon...

I read this quick interview with Slashdot's Rob Malda (CmdrTaco) and I couldn't believe this bit: Right now my bag has a Nokia 3360 with a pretty much permanently dead battery (I hate getting cel phone calls so that suits me.) Great. Now we know why the coverage of mobile technologies is so freakin' bad and why the morons on...

Now that the cat is out of the bag about Nokia's Lifeblog I'm just going to use this bit of space to relay what I told Christian Lindholm back in Februrary at ETech when he described to me what this application did. He said, "We are working on a program which has "blog" in the title, but doesn't really have much to do...

Remember a month or so ago when I wanted a solution to print to my mobile, mostly so I could bring a map of a destination I found on the computer with me without having to print it out to paper? Well, it looks like the Japanese mapping company Navitime has come up with the same sort of solution according to this post by Paul Baron over at...

The Motley Fool has pulled out an analysis of Qualcomm's WCDMA chipset efforts from one of its online boards and it's pretty detailed and full of good info of both it and its competitors like Nokia and TI: I look (perhaps overly optimistically) for Nokia to have the first commercial 3GSM WCDMA handset powered by an ARM11 processor, just...

Is there something out there that tests your web server's ability to serve requests in a slowly increasing way? What I want is a way of testing my website for maximum speed/bandwidth, but automagically. The stuff I've seen so far doesn't ramp up to speed, it just starts pummeling your site right away with various threads etc. It...

In December, while we went down to my brother's house in SoCal, I grabbed my bike that my brother was storing for me and another one that he wasn't using for Ana and we brought them back. Since then it's been crazy and I haven't had a chance to go out and get a seat for alex and helmets for us until yesterday morning. So...
