Goodness me, what can this be? A 2011 reunion episode of LugRadio? Why yes, it is! lugradio.org/episodes/108 A couple of weeks ago, the erstwhile LugRadio team found themselves all in the same city at once, which was obviously a call for a drinking expedition. And then we thought: hey, let's record a show! I thought it might be hard to get back...

I want a new laptop. After nearly three years with my Dell M1330, I've been trying to come up with a set of requirements for whatever I buy next, and they end up based around things that I've found annoying with my Dell. Now, to be honest, there isn't much. I like my M1330, mostly. However, there is one thing that's viciously annoying: it's too...

So, there I was at the multipack meetup in Birmingham yesterday chatting away to a bunch of people in the sun, including @simonbanyard who's decided to get into web development in a proper way. We were kicking around which web dev stack he should learn, which was entertaining -- PHP, Python + Django, Python + something other than Django, node,...

Today I helped Bruce be able to screencast his Android phone, so that he could easily do a presentation showing something on his phone. That is: plug the phone into his laptop, and show, on the laptop's screen, what's on the phone's screen. An app exists for this: androidscreencast. The tl;dr summary of this whole thing is: use...

It occurred to me that it'd be useful to have some of my scripts throw tasks into my task list in Evolution. Now, this is entirely possible: there's an API to interact with Evolution from Python code (in Ubuntu as python-evolution. And it works. >>> import evolution.ecal >>> print evolution.ecal.list_task_sources()...

I like A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's long and partially completed fantasy cycle. (Memorably described by mightygodking as Knights Who Say "Fuck".) HBO, the American TV channel, is making it into a series called Game of Thrones, and it looks pretty excellent to me. GRRM is heavily involved in the production, so this won't be one...

textmockuptool. A daft tool to help me do wireframes of windows in ascii-art. When I mentioned that this is how I do mockups, dobey said that I should join the 21st century. So I videoed myself using it and put the video on YouTube and embedded it with the HTML5 video element. That's so far into the 21st century that I'm not sure it'll even...

Today Rory, our cat, died. We got him a while back, and he was pretty cool. Recently he's been living with Sam and Niamh rather than me, but I'd see him when I was over there. If you ever needed a cat to, for example, poo on your leather sofa, he was willing to stand up and be counted. Or to surreptitiously lick a piece of ham while you were...
