I do not know Euan Garden personally, however he clearly fits the requirements of being a Database Geek of the Week. He works for Microsoft on SQL Tools, and has some really great insights into the changes to the tools in SQL Server 2005 here in an interview I did with him recently. In addition to the SQL Server we are all aware of,...

One of the things about having data everywhere is actually getting the data from here to there. A new article I wrote for Red Gate (posted here) explains how to use the Red Gate SQL Toolkit to do one-way synchronization from an intranet site to a remote Internet site.

Here is a link to an article I just wrote for Red Gate. It is an opinion piece about my reaction to a recent article that suggests that you cannot make a career out of coding. As I mention in the article, I had already been told I was "too old to code." What do you think? Is there a link between the sad state...

Just published online here, my article on how to check out your users reactions to your program. The key is that you, as a developer and likely a little geeky, are not the best one to judge the usability of your program.

This really is technology related, even though it is also about the election and politics. Fox News reports on a video showing a monkey hacking a Diebold vote tabulating machine. OK, so the monkey has to actually get to the vote tabulating machine, but inside the article has somewhat more disturbing news about the GEMS program that...

Seems that whenever, however I try to update my machine with Windows XP SP2-RC1 to the released SP2, I get an error message saying it cannot find Branches.inf. When I browse, the file is there, I have full rights to the file, it is not read only, and no matter where I move it, the program cannot read it. After I quit, I get a...

According to this article, this weekend Steve Jobs had surgery for a rare form of pancreatic cancer. The article notes that he did not have an adenocarcinoma, but rather a islet cell neuroendocrine tumor, which is, thankfully, much more likely to be cured surgically. This is interesting to me, since just 2 months ago today, I had a...

I will be completely out of touch for a while. Tomorrow I am going into the hospital for some preadmission testing and some other procedures, and then Tuesday will be having at least a partial gastrectomy (stomach removal) and quite likely a Whipple procedure (removal of duodenum and part of pancreas). All the gory details and...

Probably not. Scott blogs about a cool new Iomega product that I really need (a 35 Meg cartridge drive with a USB connection). This is a product I need and want, and I have a history of dealing with Iomega that goes back to the original Bernoulli Box. I actually had a couple, including the then cool Dual Bernoulli,...

Here is an article I did a while ago on ASP.NET Authentication. It discusses using one-way hashes rather than encrypting the password, or worse, storing a password in clear text. Just as important, I discuss why it might be important to securely hide your user's passwords even if you use a username and password simply for...

The Post Conference session is tomorrow, but most folks have gone home. So, was it worth it? I think so. In fairness, I need to say I got here as a Press person, covering the event for blogs.mobilizedsoftware.com, and so I did not pay for the conference. I did, however, pay for the travel and lodging, and I missed a week of...

Here is my take on the keynote from MDC/VSLive given by Bill Gates today. Nothing really new for those paying attention, though some of the VB demos showed off Edit and Continue as well as using Code Snippets. This link requires a free registration to view it...

While flying cross country heading to the Microsoft Mobile DevCon Monday I had the opportunity to finish reading through the .NET Framework Standard Library Annotated Reference. Most folks will likely buy a copy of the Annotated Reference for themselves or their team and leave it on the shelf referring to it when needed. This is...

I will mostly be blogging about the Microsoft Mobile Developers Conference on my Mobilized Software blog. Will anyone be out there Monday evening? I will be getting in a 3:00 PM or so and staying at the Crowne Plaza. Drop me a comment here if you are around and looking for something to do Monday evening.

Here is a pointer to a review of SQL Compare from Red-Gate Software in my other blog. If you have to keep a remote SQL Server up to date with Stored Procedure/Table structure changes, this is a pretty neat product.
