A colleague of mine recently predicted that Ruby would overtake PHP in the next 2 years. Another colleague recently commented on the way Java is trying to makeover its midlife crisis “Java 5 is not innovation; it is contact lenses and a toupee. ” One thing I know is that Java will not always [...]

Something that I have recently been somewhat guilty of. If you ask any of my colleagues about my choices in...

I have been playing with Ruby off and on for a while now (since the Des Moines No Fluff Just Stuff conference) and am finally starting to become productive with it. My copy of pickaxe came in early last week, so things have really picked up. On Friday I wrote my [...]

Disclaimer: I'm probably being a complete dolt on this topic... please chime in and let me know what you think. The other night I helped my wife dig out what will one day be a patio and retaining wall from the side of a gentle slope in our backyard. While digging out hard-packed clay I started to think about a talk that Ted Neward gave at the...

I was given the opportunity recently to work on a from-scratch project. We are using JSF for the front end, Hibernate for the data persistance teir, and Spring to wire them together. The app is running in WebSphere Portal, with a DB2 database, both on Linux. RAD 6 is our IDE. It has been a blast to build a full application from scratch. We are...
