No, I’m not on PHP Live!’s payroll. However, I am truly impressed with their product. We had needed some sort of web-based live chat system for sales and support for a long time, and we found the answer in PHP Live’s product. I demoed it on their site and was impressed. However you have to take [...]

The (hopefully) soon-to-be-released Zend PHP Framework is something that I am watching closely. I have recently started a new position here at CentreSource as Director of Operations. In this role I will be involved in a fair amount of project management. Currently CentreSource is primarily a PHP shop. This gives me [...]

Eliotte Rusty Harold has an XML.com article on StAX. It's a good introduction to this style of API. He didn't like the use of integer type codes, preferring to have objects. I view StAX as a replacement for SAX, which is basically the bottom of the stack for XML processing API's. You can use SAX or StAX to build trees or beans or whatever you...

Uche Ogbuji's XML.com article on The State of the Python-XML Art, 2003 is good guide for people unfamiliar with Python's XML support, like me. I found some good pointers in there. Micah Dubinko also has an article on XML.com, discussing Ten XForms Engines. I'd really like to see a Firebird plugin for this. And one that could generate a SVG /...

This CNET article is ostensibly about Cisco's color VOIP phone, but tucked in at then end is a bit of interesting information: Like most VoIP phones, the 7970G will also perform Internet functions such as searching a database for work orders. It does so by running programs written in an emerging software language called XML (Extensible Markup...

Lantern is a tool for visualizing the results of XPath queries. This looks more functional than XPath Explorer, which is what I've been using.

You know we're in trouble when we need an XML Acronym Demystifier. Things are really getting out of hand. Tim Bray is extolling RelaxNG after his experiences writing a schema for Pie/Echo/Atom/Whatever. I agree that RelaxNG is technically superior to XML Schema. I've all but given up on RelaxNG supplanting XML Schema as the majority schema...

I went with ServerMatrix over EV1. ServerMatrix came highly recommended from the guys at CentreSource. John Bransford cautioned against ServerBeach (and I remember Marcus had problems with them too). ServerMatrix is part of ThePlanet. There have been a couple of outages at Linode that were caused by ThePlanet, but they have a SLA guarantee. So...

The time has come for me to move to a dedicated server for my blog, The Store, and other stuff. I am looking for a low-cost entry level dedicated server. I am looking at ev1servers.net, servermatrix.com, and serverbeach.com. I am leaning toward ev1servers.net. Does anyone have experience with these three that they would care to share? Linode...
