Well, yeah, good progress, many adornments now line the fuzzy coat of Mr. F. F. Snadbox. We’ll draw our gaze to that plastic patch buttoned onto one of the extra buttons of his sleeve. It says extern rb_global_tbl (Audience Compulsion Favorite 2006.) Here’s the deal: the sandbox won’t be completely safe under 1.8.4 and...

Anselm Garbe defending 10kloc.org: But too often abstractions leads to more complexity, than necessary. See the Web Service disease for example. Do I need an XML parser in the future to call atoi()?

Holy cats, I’m proud to offer you this sensational hack today. For me, this is monumental, as it culminates a number of sundry microhacks from the past few years and gets us a step closer to realizing Try Ruby out in the broader kingdoms. This is the sort of thing that will make you want to post spangly angel GIFs in the comments. Okay,...

So now some Pythonistas want monkeypatching! Will the snakes recoil? Hardly, in the comments, Harry Fuecks offers up: class Foo: def __init__(self): self.x = "x = 1" self.y = "y = 2" def showx(self): print self.x def showy(self): print self.y if __name__ == '__main__': # Attach at runtime... Foo.showy = showy f2 = Foo() f2.showx() f2.showy()...

The idea here with this little project is to enhance the strings in Ruby 1.8 to support encodings. Following the plan of Matz and without breaking extensions and still allowing raw strings. For now, you have to specify the encoding when you create the string: >> str = utf8("è²ã¯åã¸ã© æ£ãã¬ãã") >> str[1,2] => ã¯å...

Lately, I’ve been writing little Camping apps that I can just drop in a directory and they get automatically mounted. I’m running a personal web server with a wiki, CampSh, and development versions of Balloon and Hoodwink.d. Both Mongrel and FastCGI can be set up to do this. Therefore: the ease of PHP installation, but the...

Tim Bray: Yep, Camping does seem to provide something not entirely unlike an application framework in a little file, provided of course you download and install several acres of infrastructure. Sam Ruby: My issue is that there are a number of superficial signs that _whyâs attention to detail appears to be somewhat… lacking. I...

Expiring a method. And let’s keep meta out of this. class Trial def run_me def self.run_me; raise Exception, "NO MORE." end puts "Your trial period has ended." end end t = Trial.new t.run_me #=> Your trial period has ended. t.run_me #=> (trial):3:in `run_me': NO MORE. (Exception) The run_me overwrites itself. But notice it uses def...
