So I have wired up the I am Brilliant application to use app_themes. I would like to say that I'm pretty impressed with the App_Themes concept and I plan on leveraging it soon. To set a theme at runtime you simply set page.theme="blah" in your pre_init method. What was driving me crazy was that the login page of my application was...

Ok, so I've had a lot more time to spend in the production run of VS 2005 and .NET 2.0. First I'd like to say that the deployment isn't as bad as my initial reaction. I have high hopes for the new build tool though since compiling into a single assembly does make sense and helps on my current projects. I definitely understand how...

Just wanted to share that my team has successfully moved the Brilliant web application over to .net 2.0. It did build out of the box but we also stripped out the user controls and moved to master pages and themes. Total time spent was < 3 days (~75 pages plus business layer). I'm pretty pleased.

Brendan reminded me with this post that I haven't updated anyone on the state of Easy Assets for a while. Like Brendan, I'm pleased to report a goodly amount of downloads. Also like Brendan I have received 0 code submissions from the community and have grossed $0 in donations. Seems to me that the open source experiment is failing...

ASP .NET 2.0 deployment pretty much sucks. Just thought I'd share. Why is there no option to compile everything into 1 assembly like in 1.1? In all honesty, my deployment times have probably increased five-fold. Other than that I'm pretty happy with the new designer and controls. The IDE is good, I had very little difficulties...

Yeah, not a programming topic but I just wanted to say that I am damn impressed with the quality of this power supply. I picked it up this weekend to power my new Athlon 3800+ dual core and GeForce 7800 GT video card and this power supply is by far the most quiet one I've ever encountered. The loudest thing in my case now is my hard...

Sahil doesn't care for telecommuting. I, however, am a big fan of it under the right conditions. The right conditions being a project guideline and scope that allows developers to do the majority of their work with a minimum of interaction. Good examples of this are modular development (modules being fairly independent of...

My company has been a customer of Telerik for about 6 months now, and we've been nothing but happy with the service and support we've gotten from them and the continuous improvement of quality in their controls. I highly recommend checking them out. Anyways, recently I was asked whether I could implement some role based security for...

I want to wish a quick goodluck to my friend Raza on his new Easy Attention product release. In brief, the product allows you to generate website notifications with a collection of nice little templates. You can embed links and formated text into the templates and they pop over the website content in a hover style. I happen to not...

http://sixdisciplines.blogspot.com/ I stumbled across this when I was taking some "me" time this weekend and just cruising the net. There are some interesting articles in there. Apparently this company is moving into my area (Cleveland). Maybe I'll bump into some of their consultants at a local event. They have an...

To fix the Object Reference Error simply open the Webmodules/Admin/EditUser.aspx.vb file. Then in the btnSave_Click method change all the variables of thisUser to editUser. Recompile and it should work properly! I'll post a new zip file sometime this week. Sorry it took so long to get an answer back, I've been hella busy lately with...

Yeah, I know, I haven't been around much lately. Between my new house getting started (foundation is done!), my increasingly interactive son, the MBA classes, an interesting side project, and my day job I'm pretty much crushed for time. However, I felt the need to share a recent experience of mine, with names and locations omitted...

I've spoken previously about interviewing developers from an employer perspective, interviewing from a potential employee perspective, and signs that developers are worth their salt. Now I figure it's time to talk about the developers in your organization that you actually want to keep. I've seen some companies do some pretty...

Dear Nextel, Thank you very much for your online account system being non-functional for the last 3 weeks so I couldn't pay my final bill. Also thank you for having a phone bill pay system that seemingly does not recognize my account number. In addition, I would like to thank you for a machine calling my house several times a day, waking my...
