Harry is looking for a few good examples of PHP applications. Given that so many applications have been written in PHP, some extremely successful in terms of popularity, are there any applications you’d be happy to point people at for inspiration? Apps which, despite your personal tastes, you think make a good blueprint for doing PHP? He cites...

Google has the mother of all datasets when it comes to a repository of Web page markup. Recently, the Google Code project released a set of stats on authoring techniques, sampled from over a billion documents. To view the results you will need a browser that supports both CSS and SVG. Firefox 1.5 is a good choice. The overview cites both John...

Google engineers are encouraged to set aside one day out of the week to work on personal projects. Open Source interests a lot of Google developers, so we thought taking advantage of this program was a good way to prepare code for release and maintenance.

This survey compares ten Web sites through elements of their layout: styles, page construction and elements. The survey seeks similarities and differences between those well known Web sites, built by (very) famous, talented designers.

You wouldn't believe how long I worked on this, no really! Anyway, check it out and help me to "train" it by performing some keyword searches. Yes, the top results will come back from my site, but so will a pile of others. Plus, I'll bet you'll find I have a lot more interesting content related to Web development than you imagined. Web...

For many years I dismissed JavaScript as a toy language, something that was only used to perform cute Web tricks (who can forget mouseovers?). Worse (as is often the case), because folks quickly realized you could use it to open new windows, it was exploited (and still is to some extent) for advertising purposes. It also suffers from (perhaps...

Using a shortcut key you assign, Quicksilver lets you quickly find and launch any app, search for files and automate most any task. It indexes what you search for so the next time it's even faster. The developers call it "Wei Wu Wei" or Act Without Doing.

Here's an interesting technique from Central Scrutinizer that uses the Duck Soup Technorati API PHP class library on the server-side to make a RESTful call to BlogInfoQuery from an XMLHttpRequest via the client. This produces a list of details about the blog from its URI, which is collected from a form input. The client-side JavaScript then...
