I’ve recently visited Amy Hoy’s revamped site, and found this sentence in her “Who?” section: Ruby makes me smile. What a perfect way to describe the very unique Ruby experience! Tagged by the community as being “decidedly right-brained”, Amy has a penchant for digging up words and phrases that capture the...

Today, I’ve decided to troll for some attention. And since right now the hottest topic in the tech blogosphere seems to be Ruby and its (un)suitability for the capital E enterprise, I’m now going to explain to the heathens what’s wrong with Ruby: What, no Main? I’ve worked as an Enterprise Architect since May 2000. I was...

Continuing our observations on software and stupidity (boy, these two go together like a horse and carriage, don’t they?), I recently came across a discussion in which one participant kept insisting that the best bet for the enterprises (read: Torture 500 companies) is to stick to the best-of-breed solutions. When pressed to define what...

As the old ways of developing and pushing, er, distributing software are inevitably losing ground, corporate henchmen are starting to clutch straws. The latest in the series of their ever-evolving FUD manoeuvres is the claim that abandoning the big-ass vendor-prescribed approaches to the multi-tier software architecture spells certain doom...

Sam Ruby is the guy who put two and two together and made it clear as a day that only if we get to the point of zero training can we claim that we did a good job building something. Let’s put this to test: Refrigerator I bought a new refrigerator, and how much training do you think [...]

There is a branch, or an undercurrent in the area of software development that tries to align itself with engineering. Developers with such inclinations seem to seek the elevated status that they hope the ‘engineering’ tag will bring to their daily efforts. They are hoping that if they get labeled with the ‘engineering’...

People sometimes ask me why am I so upset about many of the existing software applications. It’s not a big secret that I feel that many, if not most of the software applications I’ve ever had the pleasure to use suck. Here is one more case to add to the already huge pile of unbelievably [...]

Is it just me, or is the techno-geekdom community getting crankier and crankier every day? Seemingly, the days of relaxed, playful chatter have all but disappeared from the techno-geeks forums, discussion lists, blogs, etc. No one seems to have any time nor patience or tolerance for any exploratory discussion anymore. Everyone seems hell bent...
