There's one thing missing from Ruby: a standard way for parsing Ruby code ... _in Ruby_. There is no Ruby parser written in Ruby, and all the other Ruby parsers have very different outputs and are heavily implementation specific. Problem: this causes tons of Ruby code manipulation code written in languages like Java or C++... and not Ruby. This...

Thats supposed to be a rhetorical question, of course theyre dead. They died a long time ago when it dawned on us that they were nothing but untestable, overweight slobs that only ever existed because of ASP. Anybody who ever used JSPs has at some point, sworn by them, marveled at how great they are and felt really, really excited to...

Today I talked to someone who had worked on virtualization technology a long time before VMWare, who I consider the x86 virtualization pioneer, was around. He thought today's hype around virtualization technology was not justified as the technology has been around for years. This isn't the first time I've heard this opinion. Many people go back...

The debate about "Properties in Java" is boring - lots of talk, lots of opinions. Here's another approach: use Ruby, a flexible language, to prototype this language feature, see how well it fares, and experiment with possible, additional features that theoretical discussions haven't thought of, such as specifying ranges or predicates for...

I am often asked if I think that clones of Ruby on Rails will become available in insert-your-language-here, and my answer is always yes and no. One of the biggest contributions that Rails has made to the industry as a whole was that it challenged the conventional wisdom about the way things should be done. In doing so, it showed that...

A bunch of Apache Maven core commitors branch off to turn Maven into an enterprise-strength platform, as well as solve the ridiculous learning curve currently required for converting to a Maven build system. Also: free Maven book.
