I didn't see this documented anywhere but with Active Merchant + PayPal Website Payments Pro or Express, a breakdown of the order total can be specified. gateway = ActiveMerchant::Billing::PaypalCaGateway.new(options) gateway.purchase(8475, credit_card, { :subtotal => 7500, :shipping => 0, :handling => 0, :tax => 975 }) Subtotal, shipping,...

For the past month or so, I've been trying out Guard + LiveReload on a Rails project. So far I've found it to help tremendously with Pixel Perfect when matching the look specified in PSDs. It is quite seamless - to enable it amounts to running `guard` in the command line inside the project rails directory and clicking on the LR icon in the...

The free website tool I use the most is Google Analytics because of its comprehensive stats. It provided answers for these recent questions I had: Where is traffic generating from (search engine or more word of mouth)? Which pages are popular and should influence the website's raison d'ĂȘtre? Conversely, which pages are under-performing and need...

The rspec-rails gem gives us Request Specs, the ability to create default Test::Unit Rails integration style tests. Just add files into #{Rails.root}/spec/requests. require 'spec_helper' describe "Redirect Middleware" do it "should redirect based on certain conditions" get '/x' get '/y' follow_redirect! end end Rails Guide has more information...

I've been a customer of Slicehost for a couple of years and Linode for a few months. They both provide great value but the little details might persuade you to pick one or the other. Thought I'll share some observations: RAM The main bottleneck for my projects is that my Rails apps are RAM hungry. Linode wins out since they offer roughly twice...

I work with an Apple computer and have to open virtual machines to test websites with the various versions of Internet Explorer. That becomes rather tedious and annoying but it helps that I can check IE7 using the IE8 web browser so that is one less VM to worry about. Recently, I started working on a new website using Rails 3 and, to my dismay,...

In my current project, I needed to come up with a way to visually differentiate subdomain accounts. Adding rich theming support didn’t make sense since: End users are not responsible for the site design and hiring a graphic designer is low priority The web application is for automating a workflow as much as possible. Less options and...

For those of us who are still using the Exception Notifier Plugin, be careful when upgrading to a recent version of Rails. Doing so with Rails 2.2.2+ and the configuration is in an environment file (#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/environments/production.rb for instance) will not send notification emails. Instead, it’ll fail with:...
