While using the SimpleTemplateEngine to process a template with a “$package” expression I got an error. Rename this expression to “$pack” and it works. Puzzling. Then I looked at the source code for the template engine. Oops, forgot that Groovy uses script parsing of text to implement many powerful features, like...

Gist is a modern pastebin service operated by GitHub. Unlike a simple pastebin site, a gist behind the scenes is using the Distributed Version Control System (DVCS) Git. “All gists are Git repositories, so they are automatically versioned, forkable and usable from Git.” When including source code on a site there are scripts that...

This quote by Gifford Pinchot could be used as the root control equation for spaceship Earth. A non-political measurable goal. Not the right to pursue happiness, that is inherently self-defeating, but rather the right to maintain happiness. Big difference. References Explore the ramifications of this quote applied to Economics in:...

The Java Switch statement is usually considered a code smell since it’s use can be eliminated by better use of Object Oriented Programming (OOP) design. No where is this more apparent than with attempts to switch on Class types by using the instanceofoperator. Unfortunately, in the real world, OOP is sometimes lacking, such as minimal [...]

This morning got up early and sat at my desk while having a coffee. I got multiple windows up on my multi 24″ monitor setup and my adequate quadcore Windows personal computer. Perused the latest news and tech stories. Then I opened my Feedly account and looked at my Science feeds. “The Reference Frame” has [...]

When the Eclipse IDE ‘breaks’ it seems to be unfixable. Like right now. I detached the Console view window via dragging onto another monitor. Done with it. Now I can’t dock the Console again inside the Java Perspective. The top left widget just shows a ‘close’ action. I tried closing projects, restarting Eclipse...

In my prior post on how to speed up the Galaxy Note I added an update on changing the battery. Update Dec 26, 2013: I got a new battery for the phone. Hmmm. It’s faster. I’ll give it a few days of use to make sure it is not a fluke. The original battery was [...]
