In Groovy you can pass in variables using a Binding when evaluating an expression using GroovyShell. The code below illustrates this. Except the last use case. An attempt is made to access the bound variable in a gstring directly. Apparently it is only accessible by the actual binding. Executing the above results in: My puzzler [...]

In a prior post, Proactive User Interface, I was following up on prior thoughts I’ve had on digital assistants. Like with this other post: Synergistic Social Agent Network Cloud, or A Fuzzy Logic Controller Using Fuzzy Feedback. Now I’ve just tried Google Now. (This current blog post was written a while back) Wow, I had [...]

Google dropped Reader, and someone reported that “Google Alerts” RSS feed is not working. Maybe Google is working on replacing the RSS or Atom web feed technology so that it would work more in line with Google+, and like Facebook, create a “walled garden.” We know Google does some great work correcting or improving...

When you create a ‘script’ in Groovy, the type check or static compilation annotations cannot be applied to the script itself? Background Groovy has two features that improve it’s use as a “normal” application language: static type checking and static compilation. The first gives compile time feedback of issues...

The F.D.A. will now regulate mobile medical devices. However, only devices that can cause potential risks to patients. This is an important step as industry moves toward the creation of the Medical Tricorder. One concern I have is that “harm” could be misjudged here. Sure a mobile electrocardiogram device should be regulated, but...

While the 140 character limit has not been an impediment to the success of the Twitter model, perhaps longer or connected tweets could be an advantage. I wrote about this before in Twixt: “Tweet Continuations“. Just read another blog post about this: “Longer ideas in Twitter?” Further reading Seems there is a service...

Some scripting languages such as PHP, JavaScript, and Groovy allow the use of object reference in a conditional context. They have a standard boolean coercion for certain objects or references, “truthy” and “falsy” values. Could this be useful in Java? For example, we can run this inline script in the Groovy language:...
