Roman Mackovcak has evaluated and compared Ferret and the MySQL full text search.

In the process he mentions acts_as_ferret:

Plugin acts_as_ferret does all the work for you [...] Multi entity indexing is possible and easy. In combination with acts_as_ferret plug-in it is extremely simple.

For those of you considering which full text search engine to use for Ruby or Rails this article is well worth a read.
